Great Planes Stearman 1.20

The Stearman is one of my favorite planes. I have flown it for three seasons now. It is a very easy flyer, with no bad stall tendencies. Landings are very easy (for a bipe) and slow. It is a pleasure to fly, great looking plane. Any one who enjoys flying scale planes will love this bird!

Below I have included some pictures from the build.

Set Up

Here is how I set it up:

Engine - Evo 26GT

Prop - Mejzlik 18x6

Muffler - Bisson Sport

Servos - JR Digital DS821 on all surfaces and throttle, Hitec HS475HB on choke

Battery - 2000 mAh NiMH 6v for radio, 2000 mAh NiMH 4.8v ignition

Receiver - Futaba 8 channel 2.4 (previously sinthesized 9 channel)

"Dummy" radial engine and Biela prop - very nice looking prop, perfectly matching the plane, but.... not very efficient - I found that just by going to Mejzlik, or APC I have gained over 800 rpm.

To power my Stearman I decided to use Evolution 26GT gasoline engine. It is lighter that Zenoah 26, and has more power. I originally had Biela 18x6 carbon fiber prop on it. I was not impressed by the performance I got with this prop. I switched to 18x6W APC, and noticed great improvement in performance. Later I switched to 18x6 Mejzlik carbon fiber prop. This engine has enough power for a very nice scale flight and "light" aerobatics. Loops are very scale, sound is great, and it has been very reliable - no "dead sticks" at all - NOT ONE! (so far ;-)  ).
